How Explainable AI and Bias Are Interconnected

In the ever-expanding universe of artificial intelligence (AI), two concepts often cross paths in conversations, debates, and indeed, in practice – explainability and bias. These terms, at first glance, might seem to be independent realms, but a closer inspection reveals a complex, profound, and vital interconnection.

Although these terms are often used interchangeably, they convey different aspects of AI understanding. Interpretability is the degree to which a human can understand the inner workings of an AI model. In contrast, explainability relates to the ability to describe the logic behind a model’s output in human-comprehensible terms. An interpretable model can be understood in its entirety, while an explainable model provides understandable reasons for its decisions, even if its inner workings remain a mystery.

Explainability vs Interpretability

Machine Learning (ML) bias is an unwelcome, yet often unavoidable by-product of AI systems. Itโ€™s the systematic error introduced into training from the underlying data, leading to unfair outcomes. In other words, if your model is trained on skewed or discriminatory data, the model, by default, inherits these biases, leading to prejudiced predictions.

Now, the link between explainable AI and bias is intriguing, to say the least. To mitigate ML bias, we first need to understand it. The clearer the AI’s decision-making process, the easier it is to spot bias lurking in the corners. It’s like following a breadcrumb trail left behind by the model. Without explainability, this trail is shrouded in the fog of the black-box model, making bias detection and mitigation an uphill task.

Explaining AI models helps to ‘light up’ the reasoning paths, making biases visible. When the model’s decisions can be explained, we can trace back the sources of bias, whether they are inherent in the data or a result of the model architecture itself. In short, without explainability, the task of spotting and addressing ML bias becomes tantamount to navigating a labyrinth in the dark.

The conversation on AI bias isnโ€™t complete without discussing potential solutions to algorithmic bias. As a primary step, biased data needs to be identified and rectified. Techniques such as re-sampling, generating synthetic data, or applying algorithmic fairness corrections can be employed. However, the effectiveness of these methods hinges on the ability to detect bias, bringing us back to the importance of explainable AI.

Moreover, a continuous feedback mechanism that allows updating models based on the outcomes they produce can help tackle bias dynamically. This, coupled with laws and regulations mandating transparency in AI systems, could go a long way towards achieving more unbiased, fairer AI models.
