A data expert must do numerous tasks while developing a machine learning (ML) model. Among these tasks, error analysis is perhaps one of the most crucial aspects of the procedure since it allows you to evaluate your model’s quality.

Techniques to calculate errors in machine learning

There are several methods for calculating errors in machine learning, depending on the job and model at hand. Common techniques include:

Mean Squared Error (MSE). This is a frequently used strategy for regression issues in which the objective is to predict a continuous result. MSE is the mean of the squared difference between the expected and actual values.

Similar to MSE, Mean Absolute Error (MAE) is also utilized for regression difficulties. However, rather than square the difference, the absolute value is used.

The F1 score is used for classification issues and combines accuracy and recall.

ROC-AUC Curve depicts an algorithm’s performance on all classification thresholds. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) is a measure representing the model’s overall performance.

The Categorical Cross-Entropy Loss forecasts one of more than two probable classes in multi-class classification tasks. It evaluates the dissimilarity between the expected label and the actual likelihood.

The Confusion Matrix is a table that characterizes the performance of a classification method. True positives, true negatives, false negatives, and false positives are shown.

The Binary Cross-Entropy Loss predicts one of two probable classes in binary classification issues. It quantifies the dissimilarity between the expected label and the actual likelihood.


The accuracy of machine learning models is a focus of attention for data specialists. Errors, though, might reveal much more about your model’s efficacy than any other metric. Unfortunately, it may be challenging to assess inaccuracy in ML models because of their complexity. Error Analysis, like model development and testing, is a loop; thus, it may be beneficial to allocate resources and divide the work among team members to complete it more quickly.
